Cynthia From BSmith@VCOMTELC.TELECOM.com.au Wed Nov 2 23:28 PST 1994 From: "Smith, Brian" Subject: Steve's concert In Melbourne OK, I was at the concert too, standing with Mr. Green, so I'll post a less factual review (I didn't keep a song list), but hopefully relate the feeling that was there. Firstly, Steve's had a short back and sides haircut, which his Mum doesn't like. He work all black, unlike last time when he wore some purple tartan/checked monstrosities. He was playing a thin bodied acoustic 12 string (which gave him a little trouble when playing barre chords) and a normal 6 string. He said fairly early on that the set wasn't going well: his brain just wasn't feeding him lyrics properly ! Naturally the crowd helped out, but he wasn't happy with himself when it happened. It looked fine from where we were, in fact it really added character and "fun" to the show when he stopped and asked for a cue, but from his point of view it's a let down. When you think about it though...10 or so Church albums, 4 solo albums....the amount of songs he has to have "on tap" is pretty high ! No wonder a few things escape him now and then. The show was a bit spoiled by a loud group of half-drunk girls who insisted on singing along to most of the songs, and could be clearly heard when Steve got quiet. Two guys got up from the audience and did a song each. The same guy who played "Myrrh" at the last concert played "Is This Where You Live", and after some discussion Steve allowed him to de-tune the bottom strings of the 12 string down to D. After he'd finished though, the re-tuning didn't go so well so Steve dashed backstage and grabbed a six string instead. The other guy played Mistress (which Steve had already done), but being left handed had to play all his chords upside down. This gave him some trouble and he had to stop several times....I wish I'd volunteered to do "Will I Start To Bleed" :) (For the dylan fan) The Dylan song had a lines :"So I'll give my heart to you" and "or is your love in vain". It was a slow love song, that's all I remember for now. This was the most casual set I'd ever seen. He'd pause every now and then to do impressions of other Australian musos: Nick Seymour, Reg Mombassa etc. He commented on Jimmy Barnes (saying he was being forced to) saying it was pretty clever for a working class man to become a tax exile in the south of France. Life's Little Luxuries (which he remembered word perfect - even the bit at the end) really sounded great when played fiercely. Almost With You was very good too, I'll be trying to remember how he played it. The guy who worked out Month of Sundays was right about that second chord....but the chorus had four chords in it....which looked quite strange. Someone want to write to Steve and ask him for them ? I hope he comes back every six months (or six weeks/days). That way I've got more chance of taping the shows...like the manager of the venue was doing last night. "Rank hath its privileges" and "He who owns the stage makes the rules" are two saying that leap to mind. Mr. Horan, where's your report ?! *Taps chest communicator -BEEP- * Mr Horan ? The album proper sounds good (I just received it today and have just listened once through); strange synth-pop with an ambient edge and a sense of humour, very much the product of its creators. It's sad but for being such a great band, the Church doesn't get much recognition in the US. Most so-called "alternative" stations only play UTMW. Like that was their only song . . . 8-( I saw SK and MWP doing their acoustic set a couple of months ago in St. Louis for FREE (sorry, I hate to rub it in but it's true). I think it was a benefit concert of some sort, but the place was only HALF FULL. All one had to do to go to this concert was stop by the local pizza chain participating in this event (w/ the local radio station) and pick up the free passes. I guess it was too much trouble for some. What a waste . . .. . I bet they won't be coming by St. Louieeeee (Ha! Is that like an Australian joke?) again for a long time. Anyway, I still had a great time because it was my first time seeing them in concert. So far the secret has been kept very well indeed by the media. BTW, I neglected to clarify in my last post; "Untitled One" is not on the album proper, but is one of the 14 tracks on the bonus disc, all of which are called "Untitled (x)". The extra bit on the CD single version with Steve speaking is not on the album version of "Untitled One", which runs just over 11 minutes. The version of "I Cannot Feel You" on the CD single is a stripped-back instrumental of the cutely melodic vocal version on the album itself; the other tracks are identical to the album versions with the exception that "Back Of My Mind" has a shorter ambient intro on the single. -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony Horan, Melbourne Australia - anthony@xymox.apana.org.au Physical mail: P.O. My name is Scott and I'm currently a student at the University of Oregon in Eugene. My first experience with the Church (aside from seeing "Under the Milky Way on MTV) came in early 1990, roughly at the same that Gold Afternoon Fix was released. As a consequence, GAF became the first Church album that I heard in its entirety. Since then I have purchased anything I could get my hands on, devoutly searching through Goldmine for special promos and such. Overall, I would have to say that Starfish is my favorite album, as I believe it has the most continuity of all the Church albums. Also, I have a soft spot for Remote Luxury, which although is not considered one of their best, still contains many songs that I can't stop humming (especially "A Month of Sundays") While it would be too painful (and pointless) to say what my favorite song was, my top ten would include these (in no particular order) 1) Texas Moon 2) Fly Home 3) Aura 4) Reptile 5) Fly 6) A Month of Sundays 7) Antenna 8) Night of Light 9) Grind 10) Bel-Air. As an English major, I particular enjoy the allusive (elusive) nature of Steve Kilbey's lyrics, especially in songs like Myrrh and Destination. I was lucky enough to see them on their GAF tour in 1990 at the Warfield in San Francisco, where I was amazed at how damn loud they were! They brought out the energy that lies imbedded in their serpentine, echoing music that I had experienced before. As a consequence, I have never listened to them the same again. As far as other music is concerned my tastes are comparable. I am also an avid fan of Mazzy Star, Luna, Slowdive, Verve and other like bands. I'd also like to add that I'm ecstatic at finding a forum to talk about the Church. I often feel like I'm the only one who likes them, so this should be the tonic that I need! -Scott From sbartnik@garlic.mwc.edu Fri Nov 11 15:28 PST 1994 From: Sean Hey all, This is a pretty quiet little list, you know? I know what lines I think are wrong, but would rather hear other people's opinions first. "Texas Moon" yeah... Mmmm... One more day I may forget my reason, Some would say we bathed like her perfume, Followed the light in South in days like treason, And live out my days beneath the Texas moon... Started out a cardshark in Palm City, Playing for an undertaker's spoon -- Lost my fancy vest and both my kidneys -- Two rejects and one Texas moon I met a bunch of fools in Oklahoma, Their leader was a lonesome old baboon, He had these bastards hooked on homemade soma -- Hooked on that, yeah, and the Texas moon... He knew a house that opened up in Dallas, I slipped it in her dark and sweetened room, (play on womb) She said, "Afraid I can't accept that phallus, see?" (play on fallacy) "But lie down here and be with Texas moon..." Crying is no substitute for laughter, I would have felt but now I've been immune, (amused?) I'm hell bent on the here and ever after, The cold white fire eye, the Texas moon... And I expect to find life there unpleasant, My exit would be most inopportune, I'm leaving while I can see this crescent, The crescent of the ghostly Texas moon... It can't be any harder than this jail, It can't be any colder than this mood, It can't be any deader than a doornail, Or half as live as the Texas moon... I caught one of those solo Kilbey shows a couple years ago. It was fantastic! If anyone has ever heard a recording of him doing "Caroline Says", you know why it would be a religious experience. The show was in Minneapolis and the crowd was small but attentive and well informed. He announced at the beginning that he had no set list so the entire show was audience interaction. He invited any singers in the audience to get up on stage with him. The titles on the sleeve are wrong. I guess the person(s) responsible for the album are not Church fans, or at least don't know the song titles, so they take whatever line they can make out from the lyrics, and use that as the title. So "The storm before the calm" is really "One Day", "Can never be" is "Bel-Air" and I can't think what "He takes" might be offhand (You Took?). Anyway, all the songs on those albums are regular album songs, nothing new, except for "Warm Spell", which is a studio track at the end of the second album, and wasn't done live. Mixing up the track titles is nothing new though. I was really excited to buy a bootleg with "yell bok" on it, until I found out it was "You Took". I don't anything about skilbey's own monetary situation, but from what I know about the music business, there's no way to tell what his finances are like from how popular he is. He could be doing fairly well from production work (as many musicians have) especially since many producers get royalties and may actually get money from the album before the artist does. Also, depending on the type of contract an artist has, he may be able to make money from selling even relatively small quantities of albums. I once read an interview with a member of the Gang of 4 where he said that he only started to make money from music once the band had stopped recording. It's also interesting to note that when the Beatles broke up, all of them were broke and had to record and tour fairly extensively in order to support themselves. All of which suggests that the Church may, if they are smart and willing to work hard (which they seem to be), have an easier time of it both financially and spiritually now that they are off the hit machine roller coaster. Hope you find this kind of thing as fascinating as I do, although since I am not a professional musician it's a far more abstract matter to me. A couple of days ago, I got the latest discography via e-mail, and I noticed a couple of discrepancies: (1) I recently gave in and coughed up the $30 for the "Jokes Magic and Souvenirs" import CD. A couple of problems arose: (a) The sound quality was listed as excellent, and yet, I found that it was nowhere near that good on "Under the Milky Way", "Myrrh", and "You're Still Beautiful". The instruments can barely be heard, and Kilbey's voice drowns out any instruments on the "Myrrh." Why wasn't this info on the discog? (2) At a recent Milwaukee record show, my brother finally received the concert tape of the Church's appearance at Headliner's in Madison, WI (sometime around 1985). I work fir Digital at their Warrington Office, which allows me acces to the web. I've been a 'fan' of the Church since their first appearance on 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' - the original 'Unguarded moment' video ! I have several friends who are also big fans, and we've seen them several times over the past few years, most recently at the Borderline in London playing their acoustic set. I'll post the song list w/times very soon (or as soon as I can). I wrote that the booklet was "8 pages". I should have said 8 leafs, w/printing & color pictures on about 13 sides of the somewhat heavy stock pager. The Disc itself, as well as the cover, are all white w/silver printing that make up a classy looking package. As I recall, it's packed with about 77 minutes of music. I think it's an excellent collection, however, at the fear of sounding *too* greedy... I wouldn't have minded if they'd done something more like Neil Young's - Decade set: include some alternate takes, out-takes, solo highlights, and maybe even the odd live track, all on a double CD set. With Xmas coming up I'd recommend getting this for those friends/family who haven't yet joined our ranks, but have shown they might be interested. I don't know why EMI said there'd be a song that "no-one had ever heard", since Sing Songs (I Am A Rock) is still available for those who persist and are willing to lash out a bit of the folding stuff. They should have included an EP ! Can you guess what tracks I'm going to list :) Bus Driver, Unsubtantiated, In This Room, Ancient History and those other Kilbey songs such as "Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come" (?), and "As you Like It" which are hard to get.
