Of course > after the resounding silence following my last submission, > I'd be happy with an automated response generated by Eliza! :-) > > > dave > Well Dave, since no-one else grabbed the opportunity.... :-) As I have stated previously (probably before you joined the list), "Of Skins and Heart" is for me _the_ Church album. It has everything a superb guitar album should have, riffs, solos, arpeggios, twin leads and feedback. And the fervor and energy and enthusiasm that these grooves have has only been matched in Television's first album. I have been listening to the Blurred Crusade a lot lately, as this seems to be the album most people quote as their fave Church album. It's a superb album, yes, but for me it still is not quite as good as "Of Skins and Heart". You can hear the energy-sparks from both Marty and Peter on Skins and Heart, and how they enjoy being in a studio laying down an album and finally getting somewhere.... On "Crusade" they have a little more of the "let's see how good we can make it sound" attitude. The songs are superb on both albums (I'm still discovering new gems on Crusade, I _know_ all the songs on OSH are gems :-) ), I think I just prefer that little extra rawness in the production of "Of Skins and Heart".... As for where the world would be if the Church made it big with this album back in '81/82, well, I can only dream.... :-) They were different then, they are different now. The first time I saw them was actually a video clip on Swedish TV, and the host of the show even remarked that they were "different" than the others. Remember, this was in the glory days of the New Romantic period, where the hot bands like You-ran You-ran, Spandex Ballet and Simple Minds all dressed in suits or pirate's shirts or whatever the hell they wore... And here comes the Church with their paisley shirts and jangeling guitars and not a synth in site.... And a killer tune to boot (Unguarded Moment).... You just had to love them.... :-) And I still like the Church because they are the only band that have existed as long as they have and not once submitted to the pressure of commercialism. They play the music they want to, and if the rest of the world catches on, fine, but if not, that appears to be fine too. They do it for the art and art only.... :-) I'll shut up now.... -morten From tlovell@eng.umd.edu Fri Mar 4 09:00 PST 1994 From: Thomas Alan Lovell Subject: ooooooh, columbus... first, a comment on morten's recent ramblings about OSAH & TBC: _WELL SAID!!_ now, i dont know why this just occurred to me, but i was watching the video for "columbus" (fr. heyday) the other day, & began to wonder what the words/ phrases/syllables are that steve utters at the tail end of the song (during the final chord). anyone find these mumblings intelligible?? alan From @PUCC.PRINCETON.EDU,@DUVM.OCS.DREXEL.EDU:SG938Q7H@DUVM.OCS.DREXEL.EDU Fri Mar 4 12:47 PST 1994 From: Susan Zalenski Subject: ooooooh, columbus In response to the inquiry about what Steve says at the very end "Columbus" is exactly that--columbus. I discovered the Church seven years ago. I got HeyDay out of the library - with all the mystical references I was convinced they were a Christian rock band. Dispite past bad experiences in that genre I found I liked the record - it quickly became one of my favourites for playing at three in the morning after I had finished one of my holiday jobs. I believe that after Seance (which is the best - every song is a winner) HeyDay remains to be my favourite. I found that after the two first songs on Gold Afternoon Fix, the album becomes very dull and almost cringe material - this record is my least favourite. I found the sound was well worn, almost tired, the guitars cliche and lyrics nearly fourth form poetry. Priest Aura was better but I did not find it as great as their early work. It wasn't until I brought the Jack Frost album that I had my faith restored in Kilbey. If anyone fancys a chat you just need to post. They're OK, but not really fantastic. They do have an excellent single called "She Spits Out Stars" which I really like, and now that I think of it their last album was pretty good, though I don't own it. Has a one-word title like "Merge" or something. Russell also plays on _Unearthed_, and wrote "She Counts Up the Days" on _Remindlessness_. So here is is, mostly complete except for 2 songs. Any corrections or suggestions would be welcome (thanks already to Thad for setting me straight about "The Neverness Hoax"). Especially if anyone thinks they know the real endinh to the line "The elephant god sits unmoved, his distant eyes......" (that one has bugged me for a long time). I guess I could always go to the source. By the way, when i ordered the "Earthed" book from Steve kilbey, I asked him about "somna", and the line is "with her shoulder of fortune and her waist of time.." Just in case anyone else was wondering :-) Enough talk, here are the lyrics: @ALBUM: Remindlessness @SONG: The_Neverness_Hoax Have I told you 'bout the neverness hoax A vile trick perpetrated on you innocent folks Was it in the fall of '93 During the rise of the galaxy A tiny shift in our trajectory A little more substance to the unimaginable (And you smile) The neverness hoax The confederation was in disgrace They jettisoned their rubbish into inner space Sweet toxic love all over the place Cupid's agent off his face Have I told you 'bout the neverness hoax Religion to many, to others the butt of their jokes There came a disturbance in the Indian sea Something in the depths, a monstrosity An invisible woman kept a file on me Trying to seduce my immediacy The mechanical royalties will hardly know your name But ever since you came in me I haven't been the same You've got your certain method Time is up your sleeve Old age crawls inside your bod And waits for me to leave I must have nesting And the river is catering to the fish Aside a waving sea of reeds Where the sacred swans will feed The Dryads provide you with a wish And you wish to understand And you look down at your hands She ran like water through my hands Silver drops on thirsty lands Then she sank into the sand, she's gone Stranded on a sawtoothed reef She bled my life beyond belief Just another fluid thief, she's gone Sometimes I think of the lives I could have led Before the sweet nectar, heat and lust came shimmering out of my head In a salty cave I perspire pure oblivion A sexual dimension, of black and vermillion She said I'm drowning, in the voice of an alien There was no life for me Sometimes I plan the revenge I will sustain The rapture of the deep, rivers and rain We swam through the channels of an underground cleft I couldn't keep going, I was losing my breath Woozy with fever, catching my death There was no cure for me Sometimes I remember the blue island skies Well I was seeing the world through enchanted eyes Coral cut my fingers, my blood tasted good She dived in and drank more than she should Left me drifting like driftwood There was no hope for me Sometimes I hear the birds, the crash of the waves Across the black lake where the fisherman slaves Electric eels, in translucent coils The lava erupts and the green ocean boils Taking her bait, burning my oils There was no stopping me @SONG: Goliath You were always the favorite of all of our servants Tall as an oak when your forehead broke Revealing a head full of serpents Oh the silence where the smoke has blown Ah Goliath, let's get stoned We're on our own You were only saying yesterday that they'll never bring you down But you fell like a bird when the little cat purred Crashing on the holy ground Without violence you were overthrown Ah Goliath, let's get stoned We're on our own You were almost too heavy to carry or to drag away You lost your head like they always said you would I hope you're feeling better today Brian From Matthew.Wimmer@m.cc.utah.edu Thu Mar 17 14:46 PST 1994 From: Matthew Wimmer Sender: Matthew Wimmer Reply-To: Matthew Wimmer Subject: my little problem... Ok, my 2 cents on the lyrics. "ninety-nine lovers who can stay hard all night" is what I hear. Fits better with the rest of the song too. I think "his distant eyes are tongued and grooved" although this is weird and evokes some funky carpentry going on with our friend the elephant god. The line "your desperate eyes...(etc.) make small children scream has got to be one of the worst lines kilbey has ever written IMO. I laugh every time I hear it. Kilbey gets a little over the top sometimes, like that song, and also "Fall in Love" off Narcosis (although I love that song in spite of it). I heard "My Little Problem" on a local high school radio station of all places a while ago-- I think I'd agree with what others have said, I didn't think much of it. It wasn't the greatest thing the church has ever written, but it wasn't bad. I don't know-- I personally am a fan of both recent and past church sound. In fact, I'm kind of glad they've changed some, as if they just stayed stuck in Of Skins and Crusades or Remote Heyday mode I think they would have started to get boring and even ruined those absolutely excellent albums. It's not so much the Church sound that I'm into, its whats behind it. The Church and Kilbey (not so much marty except on spirit level) have this feeling of fantasy, I guess, about them. But not conventional fantasy-- something beyond that. They're not "earthed", you get a feeling of "remote luxury." Shit, its hard to explain. Anyway, for that reason I like pretty much everything the church has ever put out (except Chaos. Again, over the top, and one of the worst "epics" I've ever heard.) From dwp@maths.uq.oz.au Thu Mar 17 15:06 PST 1994 From: Dean Podlich Am I alone in loving Chaos. I personally think the song is brilliant - it's one of those very rare songs that could go on for hours and still not be bored with it. I also think "Narcosis" has some of Kilbey's best songs on it. These songs (especially Limbo, Somna, Sleep With Me etc) combine studio technology and Kilbey's beautiful tunes like no other (Kilbey- Church) release. "P=A" is way ahead of it's time- especially the recording styles, however I get just as much satisfation listening to Narcosis. Deano. P.S. - I still think "Skins" is the best though. The paranormal specialists could find no way to plug the tiny perferations which dripped his spirit behind him as he went down the highway. Fall in love with me, fall in love with me (its not impossible) Fall in love with me, fall in love with me (its not impossible) It was a tribute to the passion she loathed with addiction. Incessatant womanising, lashings of money and flattery in a charmed but not charming life who can describe the agony of his gradual soul benediction? To cowardly to take his own life, he roamed the cafe's and caberet's searching out other regiments who shared his most hideous manding. And they spent their days in sophistory and idle banter as their essense bruised and the void moved ever closer. Fall in love with me, fall in love with me (its not impossible) Fall in love with me, fall in love with me (its not impossible) And then the man charleton and bastard, full of pities and doomed in public, impersed himself in these biters. But this only exasterbated his demise more rapidly. Eventually, he would derive pleasure from nothing, the most illumentent pornography or the most holy scriptures would fail to arouse him from his stupor and his boredom. Great City's or the endless beautiful planes streached out before his jaded gaze and disappeared into the nothingness of his bleeding. Oooh, I love it... Getting the complete lyrics to Remindlessness _and_ Narcosis in time for the weekend... My grateful thanks to Paul, Andrew and MrGreen... Now, what about "The Slow Crack" and "Unearthed"... :-) And yes, I agree that "Narcosis" is the best 23 minutes of music ever released... Listening to Steve's solo efforts chronologically shows how he has developed as an artist. He has always been a great songwriter, but his abilities as an arranger, musician and studio wizard has definitely improved over the years... "Remindlessness" still amazes me, as I discover new details in the massive musical backdrop all the time. What makes "Narcosis" even better, is that he has stripped away alot of the background instruments, and left the main ones sometimes just hinting at the melody. It makes the whole product sound very "etheric". And as Matthew (Wimmer) said yesterday, this is exactly why I love the Church / Kilbey. They operate in a surreal world. A world consisting of dream images, fantasies, ancient future, Gods and Goddesses and 4th dimensional realities. There are so many levels to the lyrics, and the music changes depending on what level you're listening in on. It _is_ hard to explain. Still, I think we all know what I'm talking about. The music and the lyrics just speak to an undefined / undiscoverd part of ourselves. It's very mind-expanding in a way. And in these times when everything else seem to try to lock our minds into narrow, set patterns, for me the Church is a breath of fresh air, a musical escape to the reality I would love to live in.... :-) It's a crime "Narcosis" has been deleted. Maybe we could convince Steve to re-release it??? (With some of his new tracks?) :-) -morten From barmiyan@wam.umd.edu Fri Mar 18 09:34 PST 1994 From: Amy Rebecca Ewing Subject: Why doesn't Kilbey print lyrics? With all the lyrics being posted these days I again wondered why Kilbey is reluctant to print the lyrics of his songs. He obviously has no trouble with printing other forms of poetry, yet as far as I know there have only been a couple Church albums (Heyday and Hindsight come to mind) and no (?) solo albums to have lyrics. What's the hangup? Marty and Peter have lyrics in their solo work, so as far as the Church goes it must be a Kilbey thing. What's the hangup? Marty and Peter > have lyrics in their solo work, so as far as the Church goes it must be > a Kilbey thing. What's the deal? > Correction. All the Church albums up through Heyday had the lyrics enclosed (on the vinyl releases). In other words, every album until they switched to Arista. Usually lyrics are not printed due to the publishers greediness and the opportunity to sell another product to get your money. So maybe we can blame the record company / publishers? Why Steve doesn't enclose lyrics I don't know. Almost as blind, shrug your shoulder Look what you're leaving behind On the way out, out of this world On a day out, out of this world Almost apart, I'm divided With controlled darts Almost divine, she takes her time And she go out of her mind Hey there, please come and stay with me now Beneath the arches of our sky Beneath the curse that sucks you dry Almost a prize, I can't believe it Right between the eyes Almost a man, almost master Almost also-ran Look what you're leaving behind @SONG: Guilty Well does it please my honor to testify There's something that I've got to confess Me and the boys went looking for some trouble And I guess we found us a mess You know we were just chasing aliens 'Cause those folks are different to us Someone started tooting and then we started shooting Now some people are trying to raise a fuss I find them guilty Ah, take them away Well we were hunting the kind with the different mind Those peoples with the strange eyes Gonna purge this town with a burial mound So a new day can arise Me and the men were down in the glen Branding the cattle and fixing the fence We could have swore that we saw some more So we let 'em have it again and again @SONG: Pretty_Ugly,_Pretty_Sad I turned around to see the clown He made no sound, his face was down He was crying, dying to laugh another smile Down the empty avenues I stood inside his worn-out shoes I was flying, trying just to come down The circus crowd, cruel and proud Existing in the wilderness Minding their own business, of dying I turned around and they were gone I pulled my useless pity on It was morning, morning so pure and undefiled Inside my room a healing sea Nothing here makes sense to me There's no warning, wanting just to come down At great expense, ladies and gents We bring you the greatest show You can take it with you when you go, lying Pretty ugly, pretty sad, pretty helpless, pretty glad Pretty angry, pretty mad, pretty ugly, pretty sad So now I wander through the days I wonder who designed this maze If it's unending, sending out some kind of sign I turned around to see the clown I should have pulled the mirror down Now I'm pretending, extending my local in this town Ladies and gents, at great expense We bring you the greatest show Take it with you when you go, lying Pretty ugly, pretty sad, pretty helpless, pretty bad Pretty angry, pretty mad, pretty ugly, pretty sad @SONG: Judgement_Day I never intended to be kind of sane I cannot remember their glass or their pain I never expected to come here and stay And be waiting with you for the judgement day If I beat the odds you change the dice If I forget you memorize You're one of the special and you don't have to pay Your dividends are coming on the judgement day Hey some people got a lot to answer for But you keep on going Poor Matilda hoarding her stash Shivered on top of a bed stuffed with cash I told her she should think about giving it away Her option comes up on the judgement day Who knows who's going, who know's who's left Who knows why we keep on wasting our breath Where was the shepherd when the flock went astray He'd seen the forecast for the judgement day @SONG: Tyrant Uncomplicated, not a reason or a whim Uncompared, and unprepared to start Satisfied our living by the steel Riding high upon your golden cart Oh tyrant Undignified, uncivilized, but always worth a thrill There's never been Unquantified, uncategorized, until we pay the bill Never ever borrow what you @SONG: Transference Telegram lines in meadows of junk shake and I'll be sunk Yes we're sitting down the back with a headful of haze Coming to terms with our yesterdays Last night I found love at my fingertips Imagined I was swimming between your peninsular lips standing on the road Mistaken, forsaken, and totally Yes we're sitting down the back with a bone in my hand Pull down the blind on the sunburnt land we stopped in the dead of night I must have walked in on a hell of a fight I never even saw who was throwing the punch I never even asked who was paying for lunch It reminds me of the time I've told you about Every voice in the world seemed to shout I sank to my knees hands over my ears I could have heard what nobody hears But I blew out the match with a weary breath Checked my stash, there was nothing left Stuck my face into the night Tasted the rain that came with the light Sitting in the back with a sneaking suspicion Happy with my lazy ambition @SONG: My_Birthday,_The_Moon_Festival My birthday, the moon festival My life in the sea of tears My holiday, a misadventure My soul, a short career Like a lizard the road crawls forward Into regions unexplored By their boats the Mayans stirred Gold and silver soon flow aboard My birthday, the moon festival My legs a whisp of ghost My clothing, cotton under paper My shoes, a sharpened post My birthday, the moon festival @SONG: Design_Error Human design error @SONG: Nothing_Inside Hey, get out of my way, I cannot stay, I cannot adore you Drained, leaving the game, chasing this train, that they put before you You lied, there's nothing inside Say the river Jordan is chilly and wide Once I told you I nearly tried You, you're so unprepared, so badly ensnared, that they can't ignore you Fall, out of the blue, everything's true, how can I assure you You lied, there's nothing inside Always at the church and never the bride Once I told you I nearly tried Hey, get out of my way, I cannot stay, I cannot adore you You lied, there's nothing inside Saddle up a dream and we're off on a ride Once I told you I nearly tried Hey @SONG: Othertime You arriving unexplained I can't believe the chance you took I can't believe you're back again Sister come in from the rain Those images are fading now You shouldn't bring them back again In the othertime, in a bargain basement You were recognized Then from time to time, much to my amazement With each ensuing episode your elegance it really showed Buildings blossom into view The landscapes change, the people blur I can't believe this interests you I read that bedtime interview I wish they wouldn't print those things It only makes it hard for you @SONG: Heliopolis Weaving dissolving patterns Forming our uncertain terms Passing into history Going to the worms I'll wait for you forever In my house so white with dust Falling into lonely hours Let the engines rust Heliopolis And who could tell the difference When the space is slim A violation of the soul Is it me or him The earth belongs to everyone Who ever loved or felt Their touch belongs to everyone Who's ever been to hell Heliopolis (repeat verse 1) @ALBUM: The.Slow.Crack @SONG: Transaction How much do you want, how much do you want it How much are you willing to spend Superceded model bargain number are we going to wait Something in this information, something fine a new formation How much are you paying off late The girl at the bar Who drinks anything she can find Avoids this transaction in her mind The voice in your ear Who says anything it can find Enter that transaction blind How much do you want, how much do you want it How much are you willing to spend Superceded model number bargain special profit margin How much are you willing to lend The man at the desk Who takes everything he can find More a transaction than a bribe The girl at the bar Who drinks anything she can find Avoids fire And if that fire can't melt your bones You won't be smoking all alone It's the fireman A heat haze summer falls all over this land The dry roots crackle, the smouldering sun Now you've got to suffer for everyone Hush now baby don't you weep Daddy's gonna get you well away from this heat And if that heat still singe your hair There's just one man who can take you there And if that man has turned to ash Daddy's gonna change things with the lure of cash And if that money can't soothe your burns There's just one man who can make you learn It's the fireman I didn't expect to see you again The fever burning, hatred in flames I guess we just keep playing these games Fireplace, fireside Fire when you see the whites of their eyes Fire ahead, fire below Fire such-and-such and so-and-so this sorcery Tell me again how many men Foaming drifting now and then Never realized Say I'm the first, say I'm the worst Should have been here when the bubble burst My favorite pack of lies I am not the kind of man, given to violence And you know, I will go to the limits of my tolerance I fell into this web I lost my head and you found it for me Distant drums and fortune hums I'm overcome by this mystery @SONG: Something_That_Means_Something The oceans are drying, the children start crying We're trying, we're dying to leave this island to you No recovery, each day's a terrible discovery Under the wound another me, which is you What do you want me to want Something that means something What do you want me to want You don't have a clue, do you The cities are stinking, now keep quiet I'm thinking I'm linking this unthinking ritual to you No recovery, And all these scenes don't bother me Under the skin another me, is this true A cry from Venus, I know she's above and between us She's been with us, seen with us, dreamed of us too No recovery, I wish this earth could mother me I hope these skies don't smother me, just like you do @SONG: Consider_Yourself_Conquered Attracted by the metals in your teeth and in your earth We faint in amazement Along congested reefs our leviathans are berthed In a jagged arrangement Consider yourself conquered, consider yourself conquered Of that gray and mournful day when you set foot on the shore I have dreamed in a fever I dream about the engines and the noise outside my door And the grim receiver Consider yourself conquered, consider yourself conquered Attracted by the scent of the hunt on the wind We arrive in perfusion We fight amongst ourselves and prepare for the night In a drunken confusion Consider yourself conquered, consider yourself conquered Consider yourself conquered, consider yourself conquered Now listen, I don't need no documents or deeds When I see your defenses Our war god doesn't care where he spills his seed Or loses his senses @SONG: Like_A_Ghost @SONG: Ariel_Sings @SONG: A_Minute_Without_You Diamond heart heartthrob fakes displeasure As his duty finished rests around with his knees God, his Four someone you know who we were looking for Overwhelming hunger descending on me Stretches from the cradle to the factory A minute without you is just too long A lifetime beside you and it's gone like this song They bring down the angels from the troubled sky Put them in a cage to make baby cry Madison avenue choked by dust Don't wanna be there but I know I must Overwhelming panic descending on me Chase me from the grave to the nursery A minute without you is just too short A lifetime beside you and I'm bound to get caught Early in the evening gonna pull down the hood Let the silence rush by 'cause it feel real good Seven stupid prophets say it'll end in rain But the fire in their eyes is gonna burn you again @SONG: Surrealist_Woman_Blues I once had this woman, a surrealist woman She me up, she swallowed me whole I got the surrealist woman blues We went to the seaside, the surrealist seaside It was hot, lord it was so cold One minute of laughter, then tears everafter Ocean in motion uncontrolled I once had this woman, a surrealist woman She changed before my very eyes @SONG: Song_Of_Solomon You are alltogether beautiful Oh girl companion of mine And there is no defect in you There is no defect in you With me from Lebanon my bride With me from Lebanon, may you come May you descend from the top From the top of anti-Lebanon From the top of Samir Or even Hermon From the lair of lions From the mouth of leopards You have made my heart beat Oh my sister, my bride You have made my heart beat By one of your eyes With just one pendant of your necklace @SONG: Starling_St. I think I read a similar interview (maybe the same one ?) in which he said that he didn't want people to take his songs as poetry. "They are not intended to be heard / read without the music; the music is an integral part of what I'm trying to convey" (That's not really a quote, just my summation of what he said.) My immediate on reading that was: "Great idea, Steve, but it's a bit pointless if no-one can understand what you're saying in the first place !" I think that's amply demonstrated by the numerous postings of the lyrics of the same song, in which we've all heard it slightly differently ! For those of you who don't know, Mae Moore is the canadian singer/ songwriter that Steve put his producer wings around and together they came up with this product. And I'll gladly pay $4.50 anyday for any album Steve is involved in. As I listened to this album for the first time, it became pretty obvious to me. This is not a Steve Kilbey Album. For having produced, written the music for 3 of the songs and played on the entire album, there are very few traces of the Kilbey we know. Sure, there are guitars here and there reminiscent of Unearthed and Narcosis, and even one song (Ophelia) that could have been included on the Curious Yellow album, but other than that....nada! I can't even detect his voice in the background vocals! And Grant MacLennan or Peter Koppes involvement doesn't particularly add much to it either. Koppes lead on "Full Circle" is very bland, basically just playing the same notes as the melody line. Now, that doesn't mean this is not a good album. As a matter of fact, it is quite enjoyable, and it seems to grow more and more as I play it. The songs are good, although not very adventurous. There are even a few cliches here and there. But all in all, it's very listenable. Stylistically, it's probably closest to another Canadian singer/songwriter, Sarah MacLachlan (whose first album I adore and second album I detest). Musically, it's lots of acoustic guitars and breathy female vocals. The only song that is keyboard based is the dreamy Ophelia, probably the best track on the album. The title track is also very good, even though the melody line for the chorus is unashamedly stolen from "Another Nail In My Heart" by Squeeze. I would probably never have even looked at this album had Steve not been involved, but I have been playing it a lot over the weekend. It's definetely not Church music, but if you like artists such as the afore- mentioned MacLachlan, Tori Amos, the newer Joni Mitchell stuff etc., this album is recommended. Good female pop-music for lack of a better term. The local Tower store had 5 copies in the import bins, and that's a lot for an unestablished foreign artist. They must be expecting this to sell like hotcakes (or they got them for free). Wow, good taste :) We'll see if the Australian music industry has good taste as well next Wednesday night when the ARIA Awards happen... Meanwhile, here's my review of Mae Moore's album as it appeared in Beat Magazine in Melbourne upon its release last year - just for another take on the album. This was written after about 3 weeks with the album. **** Mae Moore Bohemia (Tristar Music/Sony) This second album for Canada's Mae Moore has taken its time escaping from its home country; released last year there, "Bohemia" has finally appeared almost simultaneously here and in the US. Produced by the increasingly prolific Steve Kilbey and recorded in Sydney, it's an album that falls into the rapidly growing category of music that refuses to tie itself to a particular genre, time or place and instead plays out like a carefully crafted film, oblivious to transient commercial considerations. The title track opens proceedings somewhat deceptively; a lush keyboard and guitar backing provides the soundtrack for a Luka Bloom-style rap on the song's verses. It all gels, however, once the gentle dreamscape of the chorus appears. "Shape Of Love" is as close as this album gets to radio-friendly with a little more quiet rap preceding a song which quite possibly could have turned into a dreadful MOR ballad in the hands of many a producer; Kilbey's extensive contribution in the playing department puts paid to that, thankfully. He also has co-written three of the songs here with Mae; "Fall With You" is the first of them, and it's sublime. Crystalline guitars, phased backing vocals, and Mae's nostalgic lyrics wash in and out of the song like poetry. "Because Of Love" is easily the album's standout track, luring the listener in with a delicate vocal and staccato guitar before launching into the chorus, simultaneously a pop masterpiece and one of the most simple yet seductive things imaginable. And just when you least expect it, a small keyboard-sourced string section appears to firmly stamp the label "perfection" on the song. Things quieten down a notch after this for "Arrow", a mood piece whose quiet nature belies the reflectively bitter lyrics. "Pieces Of Clay" adds Boris Goudenof's trumpet to the mix but the song never quite seems to get to where it's going; "Coat Of Shame" experiments with a gospel-tinged groove with mixed success; Mae's knack for creating killer chorus hooks saves this one. "Western Front" veers dangerously close to country music territory and contains one of the most inappropriate horn sections you'll ever hear, but remains hard to dislike completely. >From here things improve again drastically, firstly with the "The Wish", a slice of string-assisted epic scope that contains a far more appropriate horn section and paints a sweeping picture far beyond the confines of a mere song; "Ophelia" is an exercise in ambient restraint that is simply beautiful, and over all too soon despite being the longest track on the album. The appropriately named "Full Circle" brings things to a logical conclusion with a positive outlook, Killjoys-calibre instrumentation and more of those killer hooks. This album is probably going to get lost in the pre-Christmas frenzy and its so-quiet-you-d-never-know-it-was-out release here. (Besides, we have to talk about _something_ until the new album comes out :-) @ALBUM: Narcosis @SONG: Somna The plague burns on and on It's pitiless, it's vivid in the sky (in the sky) The sun glows out and on It's merciless, even when you're up this high (in the sky) And you really think you've got my number Just don't forget, I know who you are I know what you want, maybe just a little somna A woman has lived in my head, these past thirty years Talks in a voice no one can hear With her shoulders of fortune, and her waist of time Soothe your body, change your mind You've got to leave that world behind @SONG: Limbo Ate up the prophets, corrupted the saints Exhausted resources made us ashamed Hollywood won't touch you with a pole Jesus does not love you, Lucifer does not want your soul Made a mistake, no one will forgive you The servants you love to dismiss all will outlive you Set us against eachother, thought it was clever What a fiasco, well I never Such a good baby, such an old man Thanks for the memories, now why don't you scram @SONG: Sleep_With_Me Sleep with me, why don't you sleep with me You can try, try to understand @SONG: Fall_In_Love I knew this man, he had some kind of fate affliction. Each day, a tiny particle, a small drop of his soul, leaked or escaped into the air, out beyond the hints of the grey sky and into dead space. The paranormal specialist could find no way to plug the tiny perforations which dripped his spirit behind him as he went on down the highway. Fall in love with me, fall in love with me It's not impossible Fall in love with me, fall in love with me It's not impossible It was attributed to hashish and opium addiction, excessive womanizing, lashings of money and flattery, and a charmed, but not charming life. Who can describe the agony of this gradual soul depletion? Too cowardly to take his own life, he roamed the cafes and cabarets searching out other wretches who shared his most hideous malady, and they spent their days in sophistry and idle banter, as their essence oozed, and the void moved ever closer. Fred, the man, charlatan bastard, poor piteous doomed puppet, emersed himself in these vices, but this only exacerbated his demise more rapidly. Eventually he could derive pleasure from nothing, the most lurid pornography or the most holy scriptures failed to arouse him from his stupor, his boredom. Great cities, or the endless beautiful plains stretched out before his jaded gaze and disappeared into the nothingness of his feeling. @SONG: Space If you're not a commodity, why are you so scarce Invisible even in your solar flares I battled your intensity You really got propensity To burn, to burn Stumbling 'round the moonscape With the gravity of a feather I know that it's a calamity We just talk of the weather The silver of your sun suit Negates the execute I want to escape, I want to escape Your pull Struggling against the cold Spat at by the torrent Grabbing at little silver fishes Dream fabrique is wishes, washes A hundred leagues under the lake A town down there and then I wake Don't change, don't change Wonder, it's no wonder Wonder, it's no wonder Don't tell me now it's over Over in an instant, instantly over Atoms, starlings, missiles, batteries Cotton, infants, fishes, wishing Breathing, whispers, breakthrough, wicked Nonsense, dirges, princes, fathers Moonlight, flattery, rainbow, orbit Falling, midnight, crashing, tackle Freezing, glowing, cinders, forces Power, sticky, setback, arching Outward, naked, narrow, willing Storming, killing, spinning, happening , kissing, forming, shaking Bottle, hammer, reefer, buddha Mantra, shudder, city -paul From dwp@maths.uq.oz.au Thu Mar 24 15:25 PST 1994 From: Dean Podlich I was just listening to a mixed tape of the Church (pre-Starfish) and no matter how much I try and justify S.Kilbey's (+church) last couple of albums, the first 5-6 years were totally brilliant. I mean there so much of a live feel or something on these early albums that has been lost in the last couple of years. Just look at some of these songs: Chrome Injury, She Never Said, Fighter Pilot , When You Were Mine, Fly, Electric, Travel By Thought, It Doesn't Change, Constant In Opal, Maybe These Boys, Volumes, Shadow Cabinet, Myrrh (The best song for a warm fuzzy feeling), Columbus, Roman, tantalized, Life Speeds Up, The Night Is Very Soft, Trance Ending. They all jump off the record at you. I still love Steve's work but I'd love to see the next album like Seance or Of skins and Heart. I know, I was at the store at 10:00am, waiting for them to unwrap them in the back! Pretty interesting theory though.... Btw, I glanced through the latest ICE Newsletter this evening, and on page 5 they said (something like) "Arista will release an additional disc with the first 15 or 20 000 copies of the new Church album, Sometime Anywhere, to be released on May 24th. The 7 additional tracks were recorded during the very prolific recording sessions for the album, and even though they did not fit on the album, they were simply too good to be left unreleased, according to a label spokesman." Actually, if you all sent me $50.... :-) :-) Seriously though, these are not the first solo shows he has given. I have tapes of 3 different solo-shows he has done here in the States, Chicago, 3/90, Baltimore, 10/90 and one in Santa Rosa (?/90). The first 2 are hilarious, Steve is encouraging heckling and he has some great come-backs. His playing is adequate, although he usually messes up at least once per song, and only finishes about half of them. On the last tape, the audience is dead (literally) and Steve actually plays every song to the end, pretty much flawlessly. Musically it's excellent, but I prefer the ones where the audience is participating. I highly recommend anyone (is that 2 or 3 of you darn lucky guys?) to go see him.... And I expect a full report and a tape.... :-) :-) Marty also did at least one solo-show in Chicago in '90, so I don't see why they couldn't do a Church Unplugged tour... :-) -m (going back to day-dreaming now...) I love both Hex albums, and probably like _Hex_ a little more than _Vast Halos_, but only by a small margin. Then again, I love Donette's voice, so that would make a big difference if her voice doesn't do anything for you. I'm a sucker for pretty female vocals. :-) Try listening to "An Arrangement" - it's too short, but it's (for me) an absolutely wonderful song. As far as I know, Kilbey wrote most of the music for both albums. Still, I thin these albums could have been even better if both Steve and Donette had done vocals. Oh well, I guess that will just be a dream. later on, Thad "This isn't death, this is just a textural event" From BSmith@VCOMTELC.TELECOM.com.au Thu Apr 7 17:50 PDT 1994 From: "Smith, Brian" Cc: Church Subject: RE: hex > I pulled out hex and was listening to it the other night. I've never really seen anybody discuss Hex in detail on > here. Anybody a huge fan? bye. I've got the second Hex album "Vast Haloes", and I really like it. Her voice suits the songs, a couple of which sound really Kilbey to me: Centaur springs to mind. It reminds me of Random Pan and Othertime in the way that it packs a whole lot into a short song. I find Steve's really good at "quickies" like Random Pan, Starling St, Othertime and Don't Look Back (B. Crusade) etc... The best track on Vast Haloes is probably "Hollywood in Winter", always get a kick out of that one. I haven't heard the first album, but you can't go wrong getting the second one IMHO. As for removing the vocals, I think you'd end up with, erm, Vast Haloes without vocals. It would sound particularly "swirling" or anything: the backing tracks are mostly pretty straightforward. BTW, has anyone else here heard Ann Carlberger's "Hidden Treasures" (the one I mailed everyone about yesterday ?) Did anyone like it ? I've decided that when I listen to it, I'll mentally filter out her voice and put Marty's in instead ! But for 5 dollars and > for the sake of Having It All, it's worth it. > > Brian "Roll on May" Smith > Personally I think Hidden Treasures is a fine album. It's the missing link musically between Marty's Rhyme and Spirit Level. Overall, I think this album is a very well crafted piece of Swedish pop-music. And that's a compliment, I think the Swedes have a knack for a great pop-sound on a lot of their albums! Ok, so I would have preferred Marty to sing the vocals, but Ann's voice suffices in most cases IMO. And the accent doesn't bother _me_ that much.... :-) When you're Scandehoovian and it's cold all the time, you talk, sing, dream, eat and write with an accent anyway... :-) Marty does a fine version of "Here Come The Tears" on the "Live at the Lounge Ax" tape, which he prefaces with a comment going something like this: "When my girlfriend got a recording deal, she snuck into my room and stole a half a dozen of my best new songs. So don't blame me if my next album isn't any good." Vat a yoker dat maan is.... -morten From mosk Thu Apr 7 18:57 PDT 1994 From: mosk (Morten Skjefte) Subject: Re: hex I am a huge fan also. For those of you who can, get hold of a copy of Game Theory's "Lolita Nation" and play the track "Look Away", which Donette wrote, sings and plays lead on. This lady kicks butt big time, it's a helluva song in my ears. And nothing like any of the Hex stuff. From my perspective though, what I love and adore about Steve's solo projects is his chameleon-like abilities to change styles depending on who he works with, and still be an integral part of it (Marty has some of the same abilities, but on a smaller scale). I'm not so sure I would trade the Hex albums for a version that only had Steve's voice on them. Although on certain songs it would be great if Steve and Donette shared the vocals (like Steve and Karin do on Curious Blues' "Isabella"). I think the Hex project originally was meant to be a solo album from Donette which Steve happened to get involved in somehow. And I think Donette contributed quite a lot to the albums. In the one video I have seen of Hex, Donette is the main focus, I'm not even convinced Steve is in the clip at all (although there is an odd-looking person with sunglasses (no it's not Bono) sitting on a chair in the orchestra in the background which could be him) The first album sound a bit "thrown together" (some songs don't quite fit in with the rest) but has a few wonderful tracks (i.e. Silvermine), while the second album, is excellent all the way through.... Everyone's just sitting around waiting for THE DAY I suppose. So here's something that may liven things up a little. What's the best song to hear the Church do live? In my opinion, it has to be "You Took". I have heard it on a number of bootlegs now, and it's never quite the same. I think the great thing about it is it's length, giving Peter & Marty plenty of time to jam. I also really like the way it mellows out before the guitar solos, and then crescendos (sp?) into what seems to be almost random noise, before Marty & Peter suddenly pull out the melody again and bring it back to the foreground. I think it's also a great song to end a show with, whip the crowd up into a buzz before they go home. And for those of you who have seen the video of the Milan 1988 show, the images of Marty climbing on the drum kit and thrashing his rickenbacker make that version particularly orgasmic. So my vote is cast. What is the best live church song? Anyone esle care to share their opinion? That's an excellent show closer! I don't know how record companies look at this (but I have read horror-stories). What do you guys think?? Anthony, you probably have some good "insiders" info on this.... -morten ----- Begin Included Message ----- From madhouse94@aol.com Mon Apr 25 11:47:31 1994 From: madhouse94@aol.com Subject: Re: Any news on the Church? Alternately, would it be possible for you set up a duplicate mailing list (say, seance-boots) where we could discuss boots openly? I don't know if this a possibility or not, but I thought I'd throw it out as an idea. If not, and if the size of the mailing list file is relatively small, I could set up that seance-boots myself (I already maintain a handful of other lists). --Vernon. I mean, be a little cautious, and mail direct to other people rather than to the whole group if you're fixing up a trade. However, I frown upon this non FCC sanctioned practice and would never do such a thing, so don't contact ME!! Bootlegs are wrong! I knew reading the alt.drugs newsgroup would be useful sometime. Or maybe just ask the guy if he has a problem with it. Probably, he really won't care. Only the most technically minded would say that trading bootlegs by a small group of die hard fans does any serious harm to the company. Then again, the sequence Steve wrote down may not necessarily be the final one.... Also, remember that Steve wrote that there would be 8 songs, but I could only find 7 titles until it was suggested that "Freeze And Burn" actually were 2 songs. It doesn't look like that (Bill calls it "Freeze To Burn")., so maybe Steve added a "trance ending" :-) Btw, wasn't the disc supposed to be released in Australia on the 26th?
