There was once an incredibly handsome young man who was persecuted by the ambition to sing like a bird. His sheer beauty sustained him through adequate performances and he gradually attracted a devoted coterie of women who were enamoured by his vague grey eyes and the curve of his jaw. His voice was bland and devoid of resonance, although he could hit his notes without much trouble, but as for timbre or vibrato he had none, and worse still, he could invest no experience or weight behind the pallid interpretations he offered his audience that crowded into the tiny nightclub where he sand ( on Tuesday and Thursday nights). So they gazed at his lovely face and ignored his dull singing. After each show people crowded into his meagre dressing room just wanting to look and be taken with his grace and gentle demeanour. Women flirted entranced while husbands sulked in the doorway. Bunches of exotic flowers arrived from strangers and the manager of the club smelt money. None of this meant anything to the singer. Convinced of his own mediocrity, the praise and attention only served to mildly irk him. He felt talentless. He attended singing lessons in an apartment above the High Street where he and his teacher pointlessly went over the scales and exercise intended to improve breathing and pitch. But both secretly knew that these methods would never enhance his rather ordinary throat. Finally, despite growing attendances and the adulation of several of the city's richest and most desirable women he packed a suitcase and slipped out of town unannounced. On a barge he drifted down a big brown river past fields of wheat and gently modulating hills where a weak winter sun struggled behind gathering clouds. The owner of the barge, who preferred the comp[any of man to women, was fascinated with his passenger and spent much time watching him and attempting to engage him in conversation. And once, late at night after several glasses of wine, the singer offered to sing for him, to pass the time. The barge-owner, imagining some rich baritone or sweet tenor emanating from his guest, agreed immediately and leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes, but after two verses he fell asleep and soon was snoring loudly. The next morning, still insulted, the singer disembarked at a small town on a bend in the river and walked the quiet streets looking for lodgings. For a while he stayed in a spare room out the back of a bookshop, and - in return for his board - worked long dark rainy afternoons, serving the occasional customer and reading the books. At first he skimmed through poetry, short stories, or the odd biography. Sometimes he would just browse through encyclopedias and atlases, beginning to acquire some new sense of the world and its inhabitants. One day he found the old grammar of a 19th century magician called Erskine, the pages still crisp and legible, each illustrated with bizarre diagrams and symbols. He pondered much on a chapter which gave advice on how to summon up and capture one's own little devil, some minor demon who might be compelled to do one's bidding and that sort of thing. so he took the book to his room, and at midnight he picked it up and ("as if by magic" he thought rather naively) it fell open to the section to which he was particularly interested. The page was stained yellow by moonlight. PERTAINING TO THE INVOCATION OF ASTAROTH It must be a full moon. inside a circle of black chalk set a goblet of red whine to which has been added a lizard's tear and the sweat of a hanged man, also the powdered root of a hawthorn. Frankincense should be burned. Half the mixture should be drunk and the other half sprinkled liberally around the room. A pinch of turmeric and the crushed skull of a still-born goat should be thrown on the flame. chant the demon's name starting in a whisper and progressing to a scream. Continue for 3 hours and then cut the throats of the two black rats spilling the blood inside the circle. This should be sufficient. As the morning star was rising, sure enough, in an armchair in the window a figure began to fade up into existence: a small, dark, wrinkled man sitting quite naked watching him. Eventually he broke the silence. "Ah, it's a better voice you'll be wanting now, is it?" The voice was velvet. It carried a strange foreign accent. The singer blanched. "Er...I was hoping..." "Hoping, now, was you?" The demon sniffed the pungent stale air of the room and motioned to the mess on the floor. "That's a funny sort of hope indeed, I'd say now" The singer shuddered. "Yes...well I hadn't really ex...", his voice trailed off in disbelief. "Hadn't expected the spell to actually work now, hadn't you? Hell! I'd love a soul for every time I've heard that since the beginning, yes the sad and wonderful beginning when the gorgeous Lord Lucifer cast that bastard out of Hell and upwards into the infernal ether." "Oh praise that vile and damned day", the demon went on. "And suck the corpses of the good and honest out of the dark earth and into the terrifying sky, where they roam in horror, castrated of their will and lovely evil." The demon glared at him with angry little eyes and licked its black lips. The singer shuddered again; he backed away slowly towards the door. "Ssss...thought it was the other way round now, didn't you? Yes indeed, you did now, didn't you?" his eyes grew even nastier. "You've disturbed me in the middle of some very delicious and pleasurable business, and, fuck a dead angel boy, I'm going to peel the skin off your flesh and lick you with my pretty, black tongue." Astaroth giggled a soft girlish giggle and uncrossed and recrossed his hairy legs. The singer suddenly bolted for the door, but it was fast and firmly jammed. "Leaving so soon now, are you?" the demon crooned, and stretched out his wicked hands, and as if by a magnet, drew the singer towards him and then brought him to his knees without touching him, inches away from his face. "It's alright. I'm not really going to hurt you." The demons breath stank. He stifled the reflex to vomit. "I'll teach you how to have a beautiful voice, you little stupid. Though there's no magic in it now, is there? Yes a beautiful voice like mine, indeed like my very own." The singer had to admit to himself that the demon did actually have a wonderful and musical voice. And then in the form of a song with the most strange and exquisite melody, Astaroth began. The words were ancient, unfamiliar, yet the singer understood them perfectly. "First you must smoke. You must smoke tobacco, moss, hashish, opium, the bones of women, anything, but you must smoke. This will give you Resonance." "Then you must fuck. You must fuck night and day, and imbibe all the salty and rancid liquids, and absorb the pus from pimples, blisters and chancres, and breathe the steam given off by bodies. And this will give you Pitch." "And then you must drink. You must drink beer and whisky and absinthe and piss and blood and sea-water and the curdled milk of foxes. you must drink from filthy puddles and from ostentatious cups. you must drink turpentine and oil and the stuff that oozes from the stem of a dead lilly. and this will give you Depth." "And then you must kill. You must kill children and enemies and beetles and deer. You must kill whales and ant-colonies and lovers and herd of horses. You must kill cities and rivers and queen bees. And this will give you Timbre." "And then you must eat. You must eat bread and iron and jellies and birdshit and holy wafers and rye which is diseased with ergot. And you must eat pig and dove and pineapples and the eyes of sharks and offal and the feet of dogs and the breasts of monkeys. You must eat lion's balls and the flowers that grow around graves. This will give you Range." "And then you must scream and you must gurgle and you must cough until your throat bleeds raw. And you must choke and you must spit and you must shout the most disgusting curses until you're hoarse and sore. And you must shriek and simper and grunt like a swine. And this will give you Control." "And then you must suffer. You must suffer pain and much more pain and loathing and ulcers and grief, heartbreaking grief, and tumours and wounds and scalds and burns and warts and cuts and bruises and festering sores that never heal, and blows about the head and insulting remarks from the mob. And this will give you confidence." The demon finished his song abruptly and sat back in the chair snorting out little puffs of smoke from his nostrils. And then he laughed and vanished. The singer went forth into the world, and practised all his lessons faithfully and to the letter. And after many many years he possessed a voice of silver; a haunting, warm, soft, deep voice that hung suspended in the air and lingered in the corners of rooms and wafted and sighed and floated like a dream. He eventually booked himself a show at the old nightclub and most of the old crowd turned up to see the return of their prodigal singer. And he came on stage and the deep melancholy voice, husky and soothing drifted around the room as if an enchantment was in the smoky air. But no one heard anything at all of this splendid and magical singing. His former sycophants groaned in horror at the bloated repugnant wreck he had become, and they angrily demanded their money back. Hounded out of the town by indignant city officials who were outraged by his wretched appearance, he ended up in a ditch three miles thence, and he lay in the warm night, still singing. And the beasties of the fields and forests crept out from their lairs and hiding places gathered to bask in this voice most wondrous, and would do him no harm. But alas, one day he was fatally mauled by a deaf bear. Steve Kilbey. ----[ end of file ]------------------------ From tlovell@enuxha.eas.asu.edu Thu Aug 5 18:39 PDT 1993 From: "Thomas A. Please send any corrections to me. @SING SONGS (thanks to Morten Skjefte ) A DIFFERENT MAN ----------------------- Inside himself he runs To look in the mirror And the face that stares right back Has never been any clearer But look at the doubt in his eyes He's not the one to blame It was a different man, you know he's never been here You can be so close, you can be so near It was a different man, playing different cards You can be so soft, you can be so hard Inside himself, he follows the wrong directions Perfect English words alright But with the wrong inflections Look at the dust at his feet, he's not the one she loves It was a different man, you know he's never been found You can be so up, you can be so down It was a different man, you know he's never been there You can be halfway, you can be all there Inside himself he thinks that he looks the same And the mind that thinks it all out Never noticed any change But look at the doubt in his eyes He's not the one to blame ANCIENT HISTORY ------------------------- Sometime I wonder how I got mixed up with you You just cannot comprehend the things that I do The truth is so fragile, the ties are so true Living in the nettles where the blossoms once grew So now you're asking what is the mystery But all these questions - ancient history Sometimes I wonder what is left to be said If I'm consumed and fading will the children be fed? The roof is always leaking, the stone has bled Say I'm just existing and you leave me for dead Sometimes I can see all love is a sled Sliding down the slopes that will lead to your bed Some of us are white, some of us are red Some have got these visions going round in our heads As you leave the room blow a kiss to me And as it falls - ancient history Sometimes a joke can get out of hand Laughing like a conqueror in a new land Convinced down to his buttons this was how it was planned Turns his back on ruins that was nothing but sand Crossing the Alps, the ice and cold blister me And all the rest - ancient history THE NIGHT IS VERY SOFT ------------------------------- Tiny drops of winter glistened on her soft fur Tail lights in earshot, headlights shine through her, and on Legs crossed in the red surge settee Sat next to nothing and she looked right through me, and on Inside the car sat a sulky blonde And on her lap the road went on and on As she dresses I look to the ground Perhaps I know where the place can be found, and on Outside, the night is very soft, but where does it end We'd pile into the Buick, but you've got to have money for that 92 people taking it too fast They never noticed where their lives are cast, and on I've got a milk white electric guitar Walked in the shop and I peeled of the notes oh yeah IN THIS ROOM --------------------- Oh, the evening angel Shiver in the way of her stare I will admit that she never loved me But I admit that I never cared And it's too damned late to buy the gate And why close it if your heart isn't there And since you know it all, I could give you a call I could give you something fine to compare yourself too My eyes begin to ache in the cold electric light There are no windows in this room 'n which we have been sitting all our lives Some incredible distance, some incredible place Sometimes I think, sometimes I sink in some incredible race And it's too damned soon for a man of fortune To have to run or lose his face And since you know it all, I could give you a call I could give you a lot more than a taste of yourself, too From vh00+@andrew.cmu.edu Fri Sep 3 08:02 PDT 1993 via MS.5.6.starfighter.andrew.cmu.edu.pmax_ul4; From: Vernon H Harmon Subject: Still to come! I just have to find it and type them in. whew! I *knew* I had 'em somewhere!! :) btw: here's what's currently at the lyrics site (cs.uwp.edu) in the /pub/music/lyrics/c/church directory: nightmare* skins.and.heart gold.afternoon.fix* priest=aura* heyday quick.smoke.at.spots* hindsight remote.luxury starfish.* seance the.blurred.crusade sing.songs under_the_milky_way * is a lyric file done by Paul Webb and is *not* necessarily accurate (of the lyrics that I have which he has also, the only better translation he has is for "Kings" from P=A, and I have to check how accurate his version is) Where is "nightmare" from?? Hmm. Apparently it's on the "Ripple" CD5 from Aus. (according to the discography) along with a song called "Fog". Ah, well. Anyway, I'm going to take the lyrics that are already there, and the ones that I have and get everything I can onto the lyrics site in a coherent form. --Vernon. I think I'll add my 2 cents... I'm a diehard Manchester-pop fan ("Polar Bear" comes from songs by The Charlatans UK and Ride) and other english-pop. I discovered the Church four years ago when my band covered "Reptile." The guy who suggested "Reptile" thought "Starfish" was all there was... but I've since become the Church guru for that group, to the extent that several of our songs are influenced by them and at least one has a blatantly stolen lick (which, placed in a totally different context, became our own...). I have most of the US-released cassetes, mostly re-releases (except Starfish & newer.) No singles, but I did get Hindsight, and a few Stever Kilbey and Peter Koppes tapes. I typed in the GAFix lyrics for Vernon, and will shortly begin toiling on PK's tapes. Wonderful that this list is becoming really active again... maybe we should advertise more in alt.music.alternative. The unevenness I accredit to the fact that this is a collection of B-sides and outtakes, and was never intended or recorded as a "complete" album. It covers the period from between Heyday and Starfish to pre-Priest=Aura. My biggest disappointment with it is that they did not include "Unsubstantiated" and that they _did_ include all the tracks from the "Russian Autumn Heart" cd5 (although these tracks may not be easily available in Australia?). They could also have included Musk and Warm Spell, since they are not that easy to get hold of anyway. Then again, they are not _that_ good either... I guess I just want it all.... :-} But, I do have to agree with MrGreen that the CD is almost worth it's weight in gold just for the opening track, Texas Moon. And they buried this one on a Australian only 7"!!!!! Also, it includes lyrics > for the whole twenty-odd tracks on the disc... being the masochist > I am, I'll take a crack at them once I finish with PK. My opinion of Art Attack: It's Marty's most boring album. Be aware that not many agree with me on this one. The acoustic instrumentation is only interesting for a few tunes, then it gets tedious. By the time "Fear" starts I'm bored. And I detest the "backwards" song, to me it's pure self indulgence. The bonus tracks are ok, in fact they are the best tracks (and possible the most worthwhile ones off "In Reflection") because they have more interesting instrumentation. Ok, Stockholm, Water and She's King are great songs, and I still like these songs. In Art Attack's favor I should mention that this was the first CD I ever bought, and I played it for 24 hours a day for a week (before I bought my 2nd cd)., and therefore I may have grown very tired of it. And I generally _do_ like Marty's acoustic guitar playing.... Aren't you glad you asked??? :-) > -- > polar bear pjmorse@unix.amherst.edu > "The sudden rush and temptation of drizzle on my window..." I will admit that in Heyday era, Richard was exciting... but by the time GAFix came out, he was just marking time. (Literally... so many songs on that album, IMHO, died on the drum tracks. Funny, because QSAS is much more lively.) P=A, on the other hand... Would "Ripple" be the magnum opus I believe it to be with Richard? How about "Chaos"? Or, to top it all off, "Film"? (That song just blew me away. Completely.) Regarding PK vs. MWP... I think PK does incredible things with SK's music, and as part of The Church he is large. But his solo albums are all (well, both the ones I have) _boring_. I actually think it is quite good .. I'm assuming it was > written by SK.. is this in fact true? Well, I think the best answer to this is given by Steve himself. This is the famous Quick Smoke line notes (thanks to Mr Green's typing): Here is what SK has to say in the liner notes.. I hate writing liner notes. it seems that most music should be self- explanatory or not al all. and you gotta dream up an approach to the whole thing which is a drag cos its all been done before, in the liner note game. hell, in the sixties there were professionals who made their very living out of writing liner notes, and they invented a whole new art-form out of it. "I'm sure you will be as excitied as i am to lower the need on the churches fab new stereo l.p. full of out-takes, on which the boys from bondi prove once again..." etc etc.. of course, in the seventies they did away with 'em altogether, reserving the space for a picture of nude children crawling up a mountain of concrete slabs with a bit of hand tinting perhaps. or just a blank space where the purchaser could project his own innder-generated concept, and then they gradually crept back into style, wherein the artist(E) could get his pome on the back of the sleeve and leave it up to you to make the connection (eg starfish) or a track-by-track run thought, like an aural travelouge explaining why the beauty fo the music and the meaning contained with, no detail spared. well having said al that, i still don't know which way to go. maybe these are clever-clever liner notes which purport to stumble around without reason untilth ey suddenly end and you realise that they've dont the job without you knowing it. maybe i should have stuck with the stream-of-sonciousness spiel, you know... 'a blood-red moon was hovering in the air like an omen, like the scarlet disc of limited quantity run in red vinal hanging in the darkened record shop of space..." but, look, lets ignore all that. what this is, is not the new church album, not in the scheme of things. it's a collection of songs all roughly and quickly recorded in small studios in australia and england, some of which have been released as b-sides here and elsewhere and some of which (should?) have never seen the light of day. these songs are in sketch pad form and were never originally intended for your ears. they are of humble and modest beginnings and beg leniency, o critical listener. but, (and its a big but), i think each song here has at least one interesting or redeeming feature that justifies its rescue from the chilly vaults of obscurity. some of 'em, and i'll leave you to be the judge of which, are better songs that some of the stuff which got on the real records. so there! and some of 'em aint that great at all... ha! ha! ha! well thats the liner notes over for another 4 years, now about that quick smoke at spot's... (Thanks to Mr Green for having lotsa free time...) > I noted that the CD for Earthed comes with a book of poetry by SK>. > how is the music on that CD and how is poetry? is the poetry anywhere > as good as the Starfish poem? Chris -- From kallista@netcom.com Mon Sep 13 10:27 PDT 1993 From: kallista@netcom.com (Christopher Barrus) Subject: Current Church topics I read in multiple interviews with both SK and MWP that most of GAF was recorded with a drum machine. RP left some time in the middle of the recording sessions, even though he didn't "officially" leave until after the album was released. At least that was how it was reported in the states (on MTV's 120 minutes - not the stalwart bastion of music journalism :-). Kind of funny because the video for "Metropolis" (with Jay Dee) had been in heavy rotation for awhile. Anyway, that explains why the drums sound somewhat tinny. As for the PK vs. MWP debate... IMHO, PK is a great guitarist but if it comes down to it, he can be replaced. MWP cannot. And to think of that when I first saw them it was definetely my impression that Pete was THE guitarist in the band. For those of you who don't know, Mae Moore is the canadian singer/ songwriter that Steve put his producer wings around and together they came up with this product. And I'll gladly pay $4.50 anyday for any album Steve is involved in. As I listened to this album for the first time, it became pretty obvious to me. This is not a Steve Kilbey Album. For having produced, written the music for 3 of the songs and played on the entire album, there are very few traces of the Kilbey we know. Sure, there are guitars here and there reminiscent of Unearthed and Narcosis, and even one song (Ophelia) that could have been included on the Curious Yellow album, but other than that....nada! I can't even detect his voice in the background vocals! And Grant MacLennan or Peter Koppes involvement doesn't particularly add much to it either. Koppes lead on "Full Circle" is very bland, basically just playing the same notes as the melody line. Now, that doesn't mean this is not a good album. As a matter of fact, it is quite enjoyable, and it seems to grow more and more as I play it. The songs are good, although not very adventurous. There are even a few cliches here and there. But all in all, it's very listenable. Stylistically, it's probably closest to another Canadian singer/songwriter, Sarah MacLachlan (whose first album I adore and second album I detest). Musically, it's lots of acoustic guitars and breathy female vocals. The only song that is keyboard based is the dreamy Ophelia, probably the best track on the album. The title track is also very good, even though the melody line for the chorus is unashamedly stolen from "Another Nail In My Heart" by Squeeze. I would probably never have even looked at this album had Steve not been involved, but I have been playing it a lot over the weekend. It's definetely not Church music, but if you like artists such as the afore- mentioned MacLachlan, Tori Amos, the newer Joni Mitchell stuff etc., this album is recommended. Good female pop-music for lack of a better term. The local Tower store had 5 copies in the import bins, and that's a lot for an unestablished foreign artist. They must be expecting this to sell like hotcakes (or they got them for free). This to me shows that the Church is a true band, not someone's backup-band. Like the Beatles (remember them?) the sum of the parts were greater than the individual output. Peter's solo-records are so-so, Manchild and Myth is passable with a few good songs. From the Well has 1 or 2 good songs on it, the rest is very forgettable. As for Marty and Steve, I think they were desperately trying to find their own style on the first solo-albums. Marty's is very experimental, and Steve's very "home-made". They are both more or less collection of songs made over a 4-5 year period... I thought Unearthed was pretty amateurish when I first heard it, and only liked a couple of songs, such as Pretty Ugly and the wonderful Judgement Day. After a few people on this mailinglist raved about it, I started listening to it again, and by now I think it's a great album. Yeah, it still sounds raw and home-made but after all these are demo-tracks (too wonderful to be buried). Now my favorite track is Nothing Inside. It's all cool stuff.... Both Steve and Marty has grown incredibly in their solo-output, both finding their own style very different than the Church albums. Steve's 2 latest ones (Remindlessness and especially Narcosis) are nothing short of gems, but they do require repeated listening. Marty's latest, Spirit Level is also excellent. I also like his Rhyme album and the album he did with his wife, Ann Carlberger. You can definetely see the developing artist in these three albums. Also, it's worth checking out the 2 All About Eve albums Marty is on. -morten From mosk Mon Sep 13 15:54 PDT 1993 From: mosk (Morten Skjefte) Subject: Oh yeah, _that_ one..... As for Richard, obviously I have only heard him on record, and being a drummer myself, I realise you can only get a true perception of a drummers ability when you see a band live.. Comparing them on record, JD annihilates Richard for sheer grooves and variety.. Just listen to Starfish for example, from track 3 onwards Richard seems to repeat himself over and over again... sure he kicks but, like Nick of Pink Floyd, I find him a bore, but I guess like the floyd, the music is so damn good you never notice it... If you look at the notes Kilbey included with "Hindsight," he says "Month of Sundays" is 'a true story; this really happened.' (that isn't a verbatim quote) Of course, it's up to all of you to decide whether or not you are going to believe that. As a longtime literature student, and diehard Nabokov fan, I am extremely reluctant to try too hard to find meaning where there probably is none; the author (in this case SK) simply may like the way certain words sound together, or he might like to play games with his audience. It's one of those (many) brilliant gems that you just feel you understand while you are listening to it but can't recapture the feeling by trying to understand the lyrics later. Perhaps that is why we love The Church so... The first two verses pretty much seem to be a story with the third verse expanding to some sort of observation or learning experience of the author. The thoughts seem to be jumbled so it could be a representation of confusion or a rationalizing thought process. Then again, maybe not... >On the other hand, I remember reading a Heyday-era story on the band >in Rolling Stone, where SK suggested that getting stoned might make the >lyrics much, much clearer..... > Is it not true that many Church songs were composed with SK, MWP, and PK sitting around with guitars and RP keeping the illicit drugs going. I swear I have read that before in Rolling Stone or somewhere. According to some people I have talked to, acid in particular tends to make you associate feelings and attributes with inanimate objects. "Can't you hear the city that's hidden in there", "Flowers who can't seem to grow", etc. Maybe this is a bunch of bull but it could explain some of the hidden brilliance in the Church lyrics. CK Ugliness you have to learn, beauty you can't teach. Don't misunderstand me, I fully realize the interplay between PK and MWP as something crucial to the band's sound. Especially an interplay that's developed over the course of years of albums and playing together. However, over the past couple of years PK just seems to be simply bored with the band. The last time I saw The Church (GAF tour here in L.A.), PK seemed to be a ghost guitarist while MWP and SK cut loose. PK isn't disposable, but is replaceable. In all honesty, I hope that SK and MWP do not get a session guitarist, but someone who can give them a kick in the butt if necessary. So far, The Church have done a very good job at not repeating themselves. I hope the new album continues this trend. Well, I don't mean to brag, but I found another copy of it the other day, and this one DID include the above mentioned booklet. It's small booklet (about 7"x7") with lotsa pages (20?) (I'm sorry, I don't have it in front of me). My copy is missing the front page. I didn't even notice the booklet until I came home... :-) The booklet describes every single track's recording procedure, how Marty and Andy (Mason) created the harmony vocals, how the cello-sounding guitar was recorded, etc. etc... I think Marty needed someone to talk to in this period of his life... :-) There are some pictures too (Ann, Andy and Marty), but nothing spectacular. I haven't read through the whole thing yet, but I would say this is strictly for die-hards (hi mrg). I'm a software engineer at National Instruments in Austin Texas. The Church is my absolute favorite group. To really explain why I should give a bit of my musical background. I was raised in a Christian home. My parents are Lutherans, but not your normal Lutherans. They are Charismatics - i.e. they do all that shit like speaking in tongues (mindless babbling), raising hands, casting out demons, faith healing, dancing, etc. Of course this is beside the point. The point is that I was not allowed to have any form of rock and roll in the house when I grew up. Thus my musical experience was somewhat limited. Of course my parents couldn't totally isolate me from rock music altogether. But the stuff that I did hear, at friends houses or on TV, etc. was mostly commercial pop - top 40s stuff. Most of the music I listened to was classical and christian. In high school I started listening to Christian rock - stuff like Petra, Daniel Amos, and Vector - which caused a bit of a struggle with my parents. I also started listening to a few secular bands - The Cars, Genesis, Phil Collins. Pretty light stuff. When I finally got to college, the first semester I continued to listen to mostly christian music. The second semester I gradually drifted over to the "adult contemporary" station - light rock - or "milk sop" as I call it now. Next I started listening to "classic rock" - and for two years that's all I would listen to. I swallowed the whole bullshit classic rock stance of "they just don't make music like they used to - all new music sucks" I first heard the Church on KLBJ, a local college/classic rock station. One night they played this incredible song: "Under the Milky Way" I was awestruck. I had never heard anything like it. It sounded nothing like anything else they played on that station. I went out and bought _Starfish_ the next week. And I played it over and over. I couldn't get over it, it was just such an incredible album. and it opened my eyes like no other group has ever done. It made me realize that there is great music being made all the time, and there was no reason to be stuck in the past. Since then I have bought all the Church albums I could get my hands on. I now have a very large and diverse collection of music, but the Church remains my absolute favorite. Well that was a bit longer than I intended, so I guess I will shut up now. later on, Thad From mosk Tue Sep 21 15:48 PDT 1993 From: mosk (Morten Skjefte) Subject: Test mail #2 I think I found the culprit now. My name is Jef Kahn, and I'm new to the mailing list. I don't have much experience with mailing lists so you'll have to excuse any mistakes on my part. But I thought I'd introduce myself to the group. I was born and raised in the Washington, DC suburbs in Maryland. Now I'm going to school at Iowa State, so I'm still experiencing culture shock even though I've been out here more than a year. Washington is a great place to live for the alternative scene. It all happened for me when I was in 9th grade or so. I started getting into the "new wave" thing along with some friends. That was really when I started to love music. In 1984 a friend who was pretty hip into new wave played an album called "Remote Luxury" by some band called The Church. I didn't think much of it at the time. I was too busy liking The Cure to pay it much attention. In 1985, as a high school senior, I started working in a record store (the ultimate job.) I was exposed to all the cutting edge music and began to shift my tastes to a wider variety of alternative music. I remember when Heyday came out. I was enthusiastic because another friend recommended it but it took me a while to really like it. I saw The Church open for Echo & the Bunnymen that year, and I slowly began to pick up the old records (Church CD's then being non-existent.) I couldn't wait for Starfish to come out and when it did, there was no turning back. I was into The Church. Looking back, I see the Heyday and Starfish albums as probably their strongest, yet Seance will always have the sound that does it for me. I just don't see it as their most consistent. I have been a little disappointed recently with the Church sound. I'm not sure I want to keep up with their new directions since I loved the old ones so much. Anyway, that's it about me. I am interested in other people's stories, since I haven't been here long enough to hear them the first time. Also, does anyone out there have ideas about how I can acquire some bootlegs? I have two, but the quality is poor. Let me know... Jef. The Cure has been a mega-band since about '85 (it's hard to find bootlegs by them older than that I think), and these days everybody and their butler likes the Cure. And since it's fairly easy to get hold of bootlegs today, the demand is huge... In 85/86 before REM made it big there were only 3 or 4 bootlegs available by them. These days 200 are released every day....(at least it seems like it) 2 of my Norwegian friends, both with extremely good bootleg connections (no, I cannot forward orders) have been looking for Church bootlegs for me for the last 4-5 years. All they have been able to come up with is the Jokes lp and the All About Eve cd. On a trip to Australia last year, a friend of mine picked up a double CD of P=A and QSAS. One side of the CD had the P=A cover, the other with the QSAS cover. The CD case itself was unusual, it's the same thickness as a normal CD jewel case, and opened normally, but the grey insert (where the CD snaps on) was double-sided and hinged. I also have a crappy-sounding recording of The Church playing w/the Bunnymen in 1985. This one's only about 45 minutes, but they played "Life Speeds Up", so it's worth it. I'd be happy to mail out copies if people are interested, but I warn you that the quality is far from top notch. Jef. And i don't mean to change the subject over QSAS. But i have been curious as to why Ploog is no longer with the band. I am a rather late fan to the church so i really don't know much about the band and all. So i gather someone out there could fill me in. Also, i just got the discography. Thanks a lot to Mort and all for such a detailed list that was excellent. Maybe i could tell about my intro to the church or even tell about the brief dream of meeting the band. Another day perhaps. And it's cool to see someone else out there that likes the church and RIDE. later, mark From mnm3@midway.uchicago.edu Mon Sep 27 18:29 PDT 1993 From: Mehvish Mirza Unsubscribe THE CHURCH Mehvish Mirza From mosk Tue Sep 28 11:36 PDT 1993 From: mosk (Morten Skjefte) Subject: Re: Intoductions and bootlegs > From jefhkahn@iastate.edu Sat Sep 25 08:54 PDT 1993 > Hi everyone. > > Thanks for being so interested in where I grew up. Someone on the list has the vinyl copy of that, which would be the best source. He has taped it for me, and it does not sound slow to me.. Maybe you need another copy? :-) Where was the '85 concert taped? And what is the set list??? I'm sure it would be of interest to people on the list.... > Jef. Hmmm... this raises a question regarding the discography... I have not included other bootlegs than the ones I know are on vinyl or cd. Do you guys think it's a good idea to add all the other tapes (radio shows and pocket recorded) in there too? Maybe as a separate item under the Miscellaneous section? Let me know what you think.... -m From mosk Tue Sep 28 11:43 PDT 1993 From: mosk (Morten Skjefte) Subject: Re: A Quick Confusion At Spot's > From kallista@netcom.com Fri Sep 24 15:56 PDT 1993 >> =============================================================== > As far as I know, there is only one version of QSAS but it has been > packaged differently. I would love to confirm any item by seeing it myself, but that's virtually impossible unfortunately. So I am dependent on the info I get from you all (and you have been GREAT!) I would love to get the catalog information for this double package. -m From mosk Tue Sep 28 12:01 PDT 1993 From: mosk (Morten Skjefte) Subject: Re: Discovering the Church > From s932544@yallara.cs.rmit.oz.au Sun Sep 26 10:07 PDT 1993 Just got this from Andrew (picking up an old thread...) > > > A burning question: was SK dating Martha Quinn (eMpTV) VJ in the mid-80's at > > > one point? One of the two boots I have is an audience recording done by a friend from a show where The Church opened for the Bunnymen. I incorrectly reported it as a 1985 show -- it's actually 1986. Here are the specifics: Smith Center at the George Washington University Washington, DC April 1, 1986 (no foolin'!) Myrrh Columbus Shadow Cabinet Constant In Opal Unguarded Life Speeds Up Tantalized You Took The show was dominated by awful sound. I remember a lot of bass -- too much, actually. Surprisingly, the sound people managed to "clear up" the problem by the time the Bunnymen came on. Funny. Anyway, hope this adds to your day. Jef. Personally, I think Sing Songs and the Ann Carlberger albums should be included. And of course Narcosis. I'd like to see a ratings grid for the solo albums too. I assume Oyvind's reasoning for not including Conception is that it's just a collection from previously released albums. Then again, so was Hindsight. I guess if I wanted it differently, I could make my own poll :-) I've already cast my vote.... -m From BSmith@vcomtelc.telecom.com.au Wed Sep 29 17:37 PDT 1993 From: "Smith, Brian" Cc: Church Subject: Re: Hurry up voting > There were some discussions on the alias previously regarding the > contents of the poll. No new songs there, except (I'm pretty sure about this), the CD version contains the only CD recording of "A Different Man". All Australian copies of P=A have the piccy of the Dog on the CD, And I'm fairly sure QSAS is the same too.
