Opinions? > > Chris > Chris, In my opinion this is the worst product ever released under the Church's name. I still don't know how Steve & Co allowed this one to get released. It is 6 remixes of the same song, two of which are just plain awful. There's a hip-hop version and a reggae-ish thing, and I have yet to detect anything that has to do with the Church in either of those remixes. No vocals, no guitars, I don't think they even use the bass or drum track. There are female vocals and a rapper on the hip-hop thing. It's dreadful. If you're a complete-ist (like myself) you may be able to justify the purchase for the extended remix, which has some additional noise guitar on it.... Other than that, avoid this ep. To my knowledge it has only been released in the US as a promo (which I have). I suspect it was a " US big-wig" decision to do the remixes to try to sell the Church to a bigger market, because I had my US promo copy long before I read about the release on Aus.music. -morten (still shivering just from thinking about how bad this ep is) From mosk Wed Apr 14 17:06 PDT 1993 From: mosk (Morten Skjefte) Subject: Re: The Big Question > Ok: The big question is: Who has bootlegs? Are these all tapes that you have recorded? I have a vinyl bootleg called "Jokes Magic & Souvenirs" which was recorded in March of 91 (I guess that makes it the GAF tour, right?) in Melbourne. Quality is fairly decent (8 on a 1-10 scale) and the performances are stellar. I've seen them 5 times, they were never as good as this bootleg. Steve even sings! :-) I also have a tape form the Heyday tour, recorded in San Jose, Ca. The vocal mix was not the best, and the backup vocals (Marty) drowns everything else when he sings. But they did play "Life Speeds Up", and that's good enough for me. I'll rate it a 5. -morten From rons@midway.uchicago.edu Wed Apr 14 19:20 PDT 1993 From: "Josh Ronsen" Subject: Re: Album titles Not an album title, but about a song title: The Golden Dawn. Yes, I did see them do "Life Speeds Up" live (it's on a tape I have). I have also seen them do "Sugar Mountain" by Neil Young with Tom Verlaine (from Television) on 3rd guitar. I was in heaven (and so was Marty!) This was in San Francisco in '88. Anyone got this concert on tape??? Oh puh-leeeze???? =:-} You mean they did the old Deep Purple song "Smoke On the Water"? Steve!!! Get a'hold of yerself!!!! If one is into the Church, I think it would be worthwhile to check out a band called Felt. They went to many style changes from 1980-1990, and people partial to the Church would do well to check out early Felt, when Maurice Deebeck was on guitar. A lot of great guitar interplay, and long, intense guitar "jams". Deebeck has a very pretty guitar sound and Lawrence (singer and guitarist) has been reviewed as always paying tribute to Tom Verlaine. The lyrics are very nice. Albums to be sure to check out: "Crumbling The Antiseptic Beauty" "Strange Idol Patterns And Other Short Stories" There are two more Deebeck Felt records, "Ignite The Seven Canons" which is ok, and "Let The Snakes Crinkle Their Heads To Death" which I have not heard (but is supposed to be comparable to "Crumbling" and is available on import CD along with "Crumbling"). After these four records, Deebeck leaves and organist Martin Duffy becomes Lawrence's main musical partner, and the results are not as good, but sometimes brilliant, and sometimes really really bad. Be warned. "Poem Of The River", "The Pictorial Jackson Review", and "Final Resting Place of The Ark" have their moments. I could go on and on about Felt Any other bands comparable to the Church? Oh boy, Josh, you're getting me started here.... Felt is another one of those bands that I just can't stop listening to... I picked up the "Poem of the River" for 95 cents at a Goodwill store about 3 years ago and have been hooked ever since.... They have never really reminded me of the Church, but the Television influence is oozing from almost every guitarnote...(and I love it). And on the "Me and a monkey...." (what the hell is the rest of the title of that album?) Lawrence even sings about Verlaine and (Richard) Hell... It is not easy to find Felt releases around here, unless you want to pay the 30 bucks for the UK imports. However, every now and then they trickle in to my favorite used store, and I snatch them like hotcakes... My favorite is still "Poem Of The River", especially the track "She lives in castles".... Del-icious-um-um... > I could go on and on about Felt > me too... But this is maybe not the place for it... Thanks for the brief history, btw. I had been wondering about that... And do yourself a favor and check out "Marquee Moon" by Television. The best rock album ever released. Hey, that's me, isn't it? It's pronounced "Chef-tah" like some great, wild-eyed, chinese cook... It's of Norwegian origin....(and so am I, surprise, surprise...) I suspect that they didn't since they were only playing a 45min opening set (they were opening for Echo & The Bunnymen - this was in 1986) When they played here in L.A. on the GAF tour, they didn't play any B-sides, but they did cover Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower." The situation was pretty funny -- they had just finished playing "Essence" and MWP had broke ALL the strings on his guitar. The catch was that he broke all the strings on his other guitars also and so he had to stand around while the guitar tech could finish restringing everything. In the meantime, SK, PK, and JD filled in with the Dylan song until MWP could get a re-strung guitar. The first one that comes to mind is Spacemen3 and their current incarnation Spiritualized. It's hard to describe the music - similar to GAF but more atmospheric. The early Spacemen3 albums fall into the "Maximum guitar shred" description: Walls of feedback punctuated by some quiet bits. _Lazer Guided Melodies_ by Spiritualized is much more closer to The Church. I was right in the front, and were were yelling "Too Fast For You," and they talked it over, and decided to play it after warning us that they never do it in concert. It sounded good, but Steve made many mistakes with the lyrics. In '88, when I was them 9 times, they did the same EXACT set at every show. I was not happy with this, since I did travel from NY to Chicago, Boston, Springfield Mass, and New Haven to see some shows. In '90, they did a Neil Young cover, and at the Philly show made fun of acts such as Morrissey and Peter Murphy, and made a stab at playing the intro to 25 or 6 to 4. It was a joint session with Sinead O'Connor. The Church were on first and played UtMW and Metropolis. Then Sinead O'Garbage played a couple of songs. Then Jules Shear (who also hosted the show) and MWP played the old Beatles song "Rain". That was it. I managed to tape some of it, but the quality is not very good. By the end of the two bars, its out by at least a note. I'm not saying it's Marty's fault, but surely the production people should have noticed this. Nothing much to it -- Steve and Grant lip-syncing with the requisite number of angle shots and editing tricks. By and large, I think that most of the Church videos are nothing to write home about. I haven't seen the compilation though, so I'm missing a couple. The original version of "Under The Milky Way" is pretty cool. I noticed that the one that turns up on 120 minutes now is different from the one which was around when Starfish was current. The videos are actually the same, but the editing is way different. The original version had more shots of the woman carrying the picture frame and less of the band, while the one I see now is almost entirely shots of the band, with the film of the woman projected onto them. "Manchild & Myth" is one of my favorite records. Lots of pleasant meoldies from voices, guitars, synths. Very good. One gets used to the drum machine after a bit. I highly reconmend it. It is a lot more mellow than what the Church do. "The Well" I have not been too fond of, I think because it does not have the feeling of unity that "Manchild & Myth" does, due, perhaps, to all the extra musicians on the record (on "M&M" Koppes plays everything). Marty Willson-Piper has four solo records out: 1) "In Reflection": very good: very psychedelic and surreal. Pretty melodies and voices, cool guitar textures (E-bows and gizmotrons). Highly reconmended. 2) "Art Attack": very good. Mostly based on acoustic 12-string guitar. Lyrics are very good, but not as surreal as on IR. Some interesting experimental stuff (as on IR). This is also highly reconmended. 3) "Rhyme": not very good. I find this to be very dull. MWP tries, but the results are not there. There are a couple of nice songs, but nothing really interesting. Not reconmended: listen to a friend's and see if you like this before buying it. 4) "Spirit Level": decent. This has more of a feeling of unity that his first two records do (something which is very important to me). Not as exciting as AA or IR, but not as dull as R, but this, for the most part, does not seem too inspired, but nice listening. MWP also appears on Ann Carlberger's solo album "Hidden Treasures". Carlberger sings on one song of each of MWP's solo records. The first side of "Hidden Treasures" is very good. I think all of those five songs are written by MWP and feature him on guitar and backing vocals, and sometimes bass or drums. They are interesting and nice, except for the drum and keyboard programming by Martin Rossel, which have an air of complete blandness and popness to them. I have never managed to listen through the secone side of the LP, but the first five songs are worth the price of the record. Reconmended. MWP also plays guitar on a Jules Shear record. I heard this and did not like this and proptly sold my copy. Too bland. -- -Josh Ronsen rons@midway.uchicago.edu "Where the East meets the West and goes South for the Winter" From tlovell@enuxha.eas.asu.edu Sun May 16 14:12 PDT 1993 From: "Thomas A. As with Kilbey, I think Marty gets better and better for each solo album, and therefore I rank "Rhyme" as his second best. Rhyme has some truly great songs, such as St Germain, Melancholy Girl, Forever and Cascades, but it does have some of the MWP type songs I can't stand too, such as Q w/o A. But overall I think it's a good album. I guess I like Spirit Level better because the feel of the album is more relaxed and complete, I guess the spirit level of the album is more in tune with mine... :-) I also like the Ann Carlberger album a lot, which was recorded / released in between Rhyme and SL. And since the backing bands are almost identical and Marty wrote most of the songs, I use it as a piece in the "artist development" puzzle, and I think this would have been a well received solo-album from Marty if he had done the lead vocals on it. As for Art Attack, am I the only one who can't stand this album?? Or is it just that since it was my first cd ever, I just played it to death?? I like the first 3 songs, then I just have to turn it off. It makes my skin crawl. Ok, the bonus tracks are palletable, but then again, those are all from the In Reflection album anyway. As for In Reflection, the good songs are all on the Art Attack cd. There are 6 more songs on IR, but 4 of them are weird, experimental pieces that doesn't lead anywhere, there's one good experimental piece and then he does another version of "10,000 Miles" which is not that different but still much worse than the "Remote Luxury" version. It is very inspired at all. The whole album is a picture of an artist in search of an identity.... Thank god he has found one.... -morten From tlovell@enuxha.eas.asu.edu Mon May 17 11:50 PDT 1993 From: "Thomas A. (don't have the cassette sleeve with me at the moment), the one that sounds like a backwards tape of MWP talking? has anyone played this backward to see if it makes any sense? From rons@midway.uchicago.edu Mon May 17 20:06 PDT 1993 From: "Josh Ronsen" Subject: Art Attack (was Re: Rhyme) I like all of Art Attack, and I think the big problem with Rhyme and Spirit Level is the lack of experimentation which MWP dabbles in on his first two records. The Viking Song on Rhyme is cute, but I really can't consider that experimentation, and the other attemps, while generally pleasing, I have to say, Lame (such as the spoken intro about the king with the clicking pocketwatch (gee, where have I heard a pocketwatch as a rythm track before?). The only bit of experimentation on Spirit Level is that pink-floydish echo guitar jam, which is exciting, but doesn't really fit in with the rest of the album. I wish MWP would have made an album that would have fit in better with that gtr jam, but still keeping in the traditional of "Mellow".) In Reflection and Art Attack are great records, in part because of some of the unexpected arrangements on some of the songs, but also because these experimentations fit in with the other songs as a whole. It is only a shame that MWP and Peter Koppes don't explore music more outside of the type of sound that the Church produces (which I think Steve Kilbey does nicely on his Earthed record, and not as well on his other solo works and his Hex stuff). Yes, the "Jupiter Spots..." on Art Attack is something backwards, but what I am not saying (it's not difficult to figure out what it is, but you might not believe if I told you). (ps: it's classified. I could tell you, but I would have to kill you.) Any news of what MWP and Koppes are doing right now? Please comment on the above. He's in Melbourne this evening at a place called The Lounge. He's doing a Poetry Reading (gaarrk !), which is a little too artistic for me. He's one of several poets, the guest of honour in fact, strutting their alliteration and onomatopoeia and other funky poetical thingos. The announcement in the local music rag said that he was ". . . taking time off from recording his solo album." So there is more on the way. I'll scour aus.music for a couple of days, see if anyone went who has net access. (Although having net access is probably bad for their Shakras.) If there were some point to the poll, some question of scientific research that needed answering, that would perhaps be fine, but most polls, especially polls about musical tastes, are just meant to re-enforce people's fragile egos. Their Concept of Self needs affirmation that their choices, likes and dislikes are Correct, with respect to the Majority. Either one looks at a poll and says, everyone else likes this album which I like, so that makes me ok (this is Mr. Majority), or one says my favorite album did not make the tap whatever, and then either feels guilty about his differing viewpoint (Mr. Conformist) or proud that he is a rebel (Mr. Minority). Even if this does not happen on a conscious level, it does occur subconsciously (I refer the interested or skepical reader to Eliot Anderson's _The Social Animal_ for more info and more references). People should be encouraged to form complex, individual opinions about music (and everything else for that matter), not just say, "duh, this album is a 5 out of 6". I hardly see what is consctructive/worthwhile/ interesting about such an approach. If you want polls, go to some place that caters to such low-brow mentalities: Rolling Stone, that baneful pop icon, should do nicely. This is my opinion for the poll. Please record it. As an alternative to any silly low-brow poll, let's have a semi-intelligent discussion about what our favorite albums by the Church are. Instead of assigning some number to an album, I will try and put into words why I like some particular record. This way, there is at least the possibility of educating some reader of this message: they might say: "I never looked at that album in that way before; I must listen to it again." or whatever. Clearly a superior approach. Anyways, The Blurred Crusade stands out, I think, from the rest of their albums in its unity of form and design. Every track on here works, and fits in to the others. The arrangements are supurb: relisten to the guitars at the end of "An Interlude", or the wonderful solos on "Almost With You", "Fields Of Mars" (I love that vibrato effect) and "You Took". The Trowser Press Record Guide says that this is the worst Church album, which I completely disagree with. The lyrics trite? I do not think so. They are compelling and mournful. Esp "In Your Eyes": "If love was worth a fortune, then I'd need a rise [raise?] to be in your eyes." I could go on and on about this record, and all of the small touches that make this record so great; the processed voice at the end of "A Fire Burns", that faint female voice in the beginning of "An Interlude", even the knock/door-opening bit in "Just For You". I have worn out my LP from repeated listenings to it, but I have a CD... -Josh Ronsen rons@midway.uchicago.edu From rons@midway.uchicago.edu Tue May 25 15:51 PDT 1993 From: "Josh Ronsen" Subject: Church Stuff For Sale I am moving and must sell nonesential/duplicate Church stuff. It contains the best guitarwork ever pressed onto vinyl (only equalled by Television's first album) and it has gems such as "Unguarded Moment", "Pilot Fighter, Korean War", "She Never Said" and "Memories In Future Tense".... They have the fresh-off-the-club-circuit-going-into-the-studio attitude and they have a superb selection of songs.... Next to Seance, this is also their most psychedelic album with lots of visionary musical angles... The guitar interplay is just mesmerizing, with all the riffs, power-chords, picking, pizzicata (sp?) and sheer volume attacks you could ever want... Still it's hauntingly beautiful and never has the feel of "see what I can do" like so many other guitarists. The only song on this album that does not work for me is "Is this where you live?". The mini-epics like this one are usually my favorite Church songs, "Is this.." just never seems to get off the ground.... If they only had put "Life Speeds Up" on the album instead.... My first introduction to the Church was HeyDay, and has held the "honorable" position as my very favorite Church recording--then and now. It didn't exactly blow me away the first few times I listened to it, but I seem to recall one day thinking, "damn, I really like this album!" After I made that discovery, I fell totally in love with it. Like any great musical work, it fills a vast, yet defined musical space--it is coherent without being dull or repetative. It also has what I call a "circle of sound" quality to it--layers of guitar, melodically energetic if you will. It's dream-like quality had me hooked--and HeyDay is the album that I have used to convert "non-believers" into Church fans like myself. I must admit that the Blurred Crusade foreshadows some of the energies that are present on HeyDay. My other favorite has to be Starfish. I purchased it during a very low periord of my life and almost all of the songs are so wonderfully melancholy and depressing---it was quite an appropriate soundtrack for that particular state of my existance. "Antenna", "Hotel Womb" and "Destination" are some of my favorites. None of the other Church albums can touch HeyDay and Starfish with a 10-foot pole, IMHO. : ) Well, the Blurred Crusade comes close. sue From schindle@leland.Stanford.EDU Thu May 27 18:38 PDT 1993 From: schindle@leland.Stanford.EDU Subject: Re: Favorite albums Cc: seance@thechurch.EBay.Sun.COM I guess I might as well throw in my own two cents here... A Quick Smoke at Spot's is my favorite later album, again because for me it reflects what I like best about their later sound (don't ask me to describe that right now! :-). The story's main character was a magician name John Erskin (sp?) who's travelling exploits are the main focus of the book, nothing fantastic, but SK's fine attention to detail was very fascinating. The second set was also (very short) based around JE, but this time the story was set in the (not to distant) future and was about 'trying to score some drugs in a place similar to sydney' (yes, thats what SK said). This story seemed (to me) that it was about HIM trying to get some drugs and the sensations after having some. sorry about the vagueness, but the memory isn't as good as it used to be. Anyway, after nagging him for his autograph (3 times), some off the Good stuff he said was : (condensed) Q. Whats happening with the Church? SK. Well, we're working on a new album at the moment, marty's learing to play the drums because JD has left the band. Like PK, he just got up and left, we dont know why. Q. What about Jack Frost? SK. Well, weve done a couple of songs so far, but we'll get into it more after Grant gets a head transplant. SK was well received, and very soft spoken while reading his stories. SK was slightly dissapointing, in that both sets were short and based around 1 character, and he didn't read any poetry. Also, if anyone is interested in getting the Earthed Book, the ISBN is 0-7316-0040-1. Also (again), there is a magazine/fanzine here that includes the writings (stories/poetry) of musicians and has a story by SK, i'll try and get a copy, and if the story isn't too long i might post it, or if anyone wants info on it, e-mail me. I am still unsure about this album. It has no tune. Chaos stands out. As for new album, I can't wait to rebound from P=A. Also, Peter was lead guitarist on some songs with Marty as rhythm, and then they switch off from time to time. Peter leaving the band will probably change the sound, but my narrow-mindedness tells me any drummer can be replaced.... Return-Receipt-To: Sorry, but I've been a bit out of it lately, I only just signed up to the mailing list. What's this about a new Church album? I was under the impression that they had split up. After the last gig I saw in Brisbane, Steve Kilbey said that it was their last tour ever, and the Church were finally going their seperate ways. That was in about October of last year. Soon after the release of P=A though, Steve said they were keen on doing an instrumental album. Is this it? Great if they haven't split up, but that came from the horse's mouth.
