Anyone who identifies the Church solely on the basis of their psychedelic spin may be surprised by the fact that, when left to his own devices, the band's guitarist Marty Willson-Piper tends to eschew those more ethereal designs in favor of folkier fare.  Willson-Piper's earlier efforts revealed him as a player of stunning finesse and with this, his first solo album in eight years, he re-connects with his muse and offers up ten songs best described as being of chamber pop persuasion.

Admittedly, he tends to take a lowered gaze, but on songs such as "More Is Less," "Lullaby For The Lonely" and "I Must Have Fallen" the intrinsic beauty of his melodies and the feelings of deep desire meld subtly but assuredly.  Indeed, in Willson-Piper's capable hands, there's little divide between the mellow and the melancholy.  Nevertheless, the shimmering steel guitar that graces the pensive "The Love You Never Had" and the lithe flutes and hushed harmonies that echo through "Songs For Victor Jara" provide a sensual inner glow, capping this Nightjar with radiance and rapture.

Standout tracks: "More Is Less," "Lullaby For The Lonely," "Songs For Victor Jara" LEE ZIMMERMAN
