What sort of music do they write ? Print E-mail

The Church have been releasing music since 1980 and naturally their style has changed somewhat.  It's always been guitar-based rock music and the lyrics have, famously, been obscure, beautiful and poetic.  Marty and Peter's guitar playing is not the typical "rhythm" and "lead" division - both are equally important and their interplay is one of the features of The Church's sound.

On the earlier records the band worked in the way many others do; band members would write songs, record demos, play them to each other and decide which songs would be put onto the album.  Since 1988's "Starfish", though the band has written the music first and Steve Kilbey writes the lyrics afterwards, sometimes just before recording.
